Quick answer

What does a plastering service include?

Plastering covers preparing the background, applying a backing coat where the wall needs building out or levelling, and applying a finish coat that is trowelled smooth for decoration. Brellon carries out plastering on brick, block, plasterboard and previously plastered surfaces in homes and commercial buildings across London and the South East.

Getting the background right

Most plastering problems start behind the finish coat. Before we plaster we assess what the wall or ceiling is made of, how absorbent it is, whether it is sound, and how far out of line it runs. That decides whether a surface needs bonding, PVA or a proprietary primer, beading on corners and openings, or a full backing coat before the finish goes on.

On older buildings we check for hollow, blown or salt-damaged plaster and remove it back to a sound edge rather than plastering over it. On new blockwork and brickwork we set out beads and grounds so that reveals, corners and ceiling lines finish straight and square.

Backing coats and finish plaster

Where walls are uneven, stripped back to masonry or need building out, we apply a backing coat such as a gypsum browning, bonding coat or a sand and cement scratch coat, depending on the background and where the wall is in the building. Once it has taken up correctly it is keyed and finished with a multi-finish or board-finish plaster.

Finish coats are applied in two passes and trowelled up as the plaster sets, leaving a flat, closed surface that can be mist-coated and decorated once it has dried.

Residential and commercial plastering

In homes, plastering is usually part of a wider renovation, extension or loft conversion, so we coordinate with builders, electricians and plumbers around first and second fix. On commercial projects we work to the main contractor’s programme and specification, with RAMS, supervision and floor-by-floor sign-off.

Plastering questions

Can’t see your question? Contact us or call 07377 741264.

How long does fresh plaster take to dry?

A finish coat on plasterboard typically dries in two to four days. Finish over a backing coat usually takes one to two weeks, depending on thickness, ventilation and time of year. Plaster is dry when it has turned an even, light colour with no dark patches.

Can you plaster over existing plaster?

Yes, if the existing plaster is sound and well bonded. We check for hollow or blown areas first. Sound surfaces can be prepared and skimmed; failing areas are cut out and patched or the wall is re-plastered.

Do I need to move furniture before you start?

Please clear rooms where possible. Anything that cannot be moved is covered and protected, and floors are protected throughout.

Do you plaster commercial buildings?

Yes. We work for main contractors, developers and facilities teams on offices, retail, hospitality, education and residential developments.
